  • Employee Development & Reward

Note: This now includes an unprotected spreadsheet that can be used to input your organization's information.

DavCo designed and implemented a comprehensive Development and Reward System in 2015 to better develop their restaurant teams and set them up for success.  This Best Practice utilizes Situational Leadership, a Performance Matrix and Individual Performance Plans.

  • Energy Efficiency

DavCo started an energy efficiency program in 2011 with a 15-store lighting and energy management project. They learned that energy costs were more controllable than previously thought. The project led them to look at savings in maintenance, operations and finance.

  • Potential Savings with QSCC's Waste Program

The Dave Thomas Family Companies used QSCC's Waste & Recycling Program and got a free cost analysis for their Pennsylvania restaurants.  One phone call resulted in an average savings of $67/month/restaurant.

  • Ecolab's Warewash Dishwashing Machine

Wendy’s and QSCC has tested and developed a new automated dishwashing equipment option that is now available through Ecolab. Warewash will provide a more efficient, streamlined ware cleaning option, with less overall impact to restaurant operations. Benefits include improved crew morale, more consistent results, increased food safety, and provides utility savings.

DavCo: Electronic Payroll Solution for Employees without Bank Accounts

Seven years ago we were looking for an electronic method of paying hourly employees. Paper checks were costly at $1.37 per check, not to mention the cost and time to distribute them.

The solution for management, Direct Deposit, was already in place as an option for banked managers.

With 4,500 employees, the prospect of finding an electronic payment method for hourly employees was important for several key reasons:

    1.  Improve the speed at which we could replace lost or damaged paper checks or correct an inaccurate pay amount.

    2.  Eliminate the production of mailing of W-2 forms and pay stubs.

    3.  Finding a more cost efficient alternative to the high cost of printing and distribution of bi weekly payroll checks.

Our only cost is shipment of new cards to our locations. No ongoing service or maintenance fee.

During a meeting with another Wendy’s franchisee owner we were introduced to Global Cash Card, an electronic solution used by this group.

We began by offering hourly employees the option to use direct deposit and saw a very low response. In most cases this is due to the fact that most did not have a bank account.

In early 2010 we began the rollout of Global Cash Card.

The rules for cash payment cards differ by state and in our case one state allowed employer discretion as to automatically setting up electronic pay, while another state required employee authorization.

We opted to have all employees elect to participate.

Once the rollout was complete we reached 98% of managers, corporate staff, and restaurant hourly employees being paid by either direct deposit or Global Cash Card.

There are many benefits to the employee by using Global Cash Card. Here are a few top line benefits.

    1. Funds are automatically loaded on the employees pay card on payday. No need to visit the restaurant to pick up a paper check.

    2. Lost, stolen, or damaged paper checks require a stop payment and reissuance of a paper check. Funds can be placed on the pay card in a matter of minutes.

    3. The same is true for inaccurate pay. Corrections can be made to the pay card immediately.

    4. Money can be moved to a bank account or a companion card, online or by phone.

    5. Outrageous check cashing fees and wiring charges are eliminated.

    6. Employees have the ability to purchase items with a Visa pay card in stores and online, an online bill payment system, and access to money through an ATM or bank teller.

    7. Our managers saw a benefit in having a companion card for their children in college by having the ability to load funds on a card versus providing a credit card without limits.

Regardless if you have 25 employees or hundreds of employees, the Global Cash Card is a cost effective and process efficient solution that works for both the employee and employer.

In summary, Global Cash Card has exceeded our expectations in servicing an electronic payroll option to our employees. They have consistently gone above and beyond to assist us with a simple cash card program that delivers big benefits to our employees. A few of the many benefits our employees are most excited about include faster access to their full paycheck by eliminating the need to pay check cashing fees while also gaining the ability to transfer money to family and friends using companion cards and taking advantage of online bill pay. Global Cash Card has demonstrated that their top priority is ensuring that our company and employees are always satisfied with their products and services.

“When OFFA talks about collaboration, they mean franchisees working together and helping each other with whatever challenges we’re dealing with -- a new product or promotion, equipment changes and so on. OFFA also collaborates with corporate leadership, but the mission hasn’t changed: we will support initiatives that we approve of as a group and we will challenge decisions that aren’t in the franchise owners’ best interest.”
