Frequently Asked Questions

Why join an independent association?

The answers are simple.
An association provides a voice for franchisees in running the system.
Strength in numbers an association representing all franchisees has bargaining power and visibility far beyond that of any individual franchisee.
Credibility and legitimacy an independent association answers to no one but its member franchisees and is not compromised by franchisor appointments.

What else do I get out of membership in an association?

Apart from a voice, an independent franchisee association can provide you with many benefits:
The ability to communicate and exchange information privately with other franchisees.
Formation and operation of buying cooperatives, not only for products but for ancillary goods and services such as health insurance, liability insurance and the like.
Advice from legal counsel on matters of group interest.

Why should Wendy’s International want an independent association?

Modern, mature franchisors our competitors (McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut) all have independent franchise associations that are a working part of the franchise system. These franchisors have recognized that a large, mature franchise system works and competes most effectively if everyone franchisees and franchisors participate in the decision making that affects the entire system. These franchisors recognize that franchisees are on the front line and often know best what the customer wants and how to run the store. As franchisees we have invested capital and years of experience. That can benefit the Wendy’s system as a whole.

History in other systems has shown that recognition of independent associations is not a matter of if but a matter of when. KFC, for example, went through many years in which the franchisor did not recognize the association. During that time, the association developed buying co-ops, explored and developed relationships with vendors, exchanged information and educated franchisees on increasing profitability, and strengthened the organization as a whole.

How much does this cost?

Dues are $150.00 per year per store.

Who is running this organization?

The association was formed by a group of franchisees representing roughly 500 stores and who volunteered to act as its interim board of directors. Their job is to increase membership and to prepare a set of bylaws pursuant to which an election of a full slate of directors may be nominated.

What are my voting rights as a member?

The bylaws call for one vote per store. You will have the right to vote for a slate of directors, who will in turn elect officers.

What about the little guys? I only have one store. All the directors are multiple store operators.

The current directors are sensitive to this issue and to the need to ensure representation at all levels of franchisees. They will be adopting a resolution that will ensure that all franchisees have representation on the Board.

I want to help out or run for a director’s position. What do I do?

If you want to run as a director, please contact one of the existing directors via email.

There are other opportunities to assist, either by being on a committee or informally. Please let one of the directors know.
